A
properly adjusted and organized office
workstation is important to assist the individual to work in comfort,
at his or her optimal level. Poor
workstation adjustment leads to uncomfortable
postures, muscle fatigue and in
some cases musculoskeletal injuries
involving muscles, tendons and joints. Physical discomfort may occur in the neck,
back, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and legs. In the office world of today, a person may be seated at a
workstation for many hours at a time, perhaps for a whole day. This increases
the individual's exposure to the health effects of constrained,
static postures and repetitive activities.
An understanding of anatomy and the types of strains and injuries that can
occur at an office workstation is important. It provides the individual
with essential information to take an active role in remaining comfortable,
symptom free and productive at work.
Knowledge of how to adjust an office workstation to suit individual
characteristics and requirements will lead to overall job satisfaction and
improved performance. The ability to adjust the workstation
furniture, equipment and environment, and to solve common problems that may occur at
the workstation, is a valuable skill to apply in the workplace.
